9 Natural Remedies for Sick Babies

Use natural remedies to get baby feeling well again

A sick little one is quite possibly the most pitiful creature on Earth. Our baby June was sick for the first time right before her 1st birthday ( I knowww….how did she manage so long without a cold??? Especially since she was born in flu season!).

Since we had recently had a doctors appointment (we suspect she may have caught it there), we were in no hurry to return. She was not running a temperature at all, and she had no symptoms other than a severe cold. Everything I read and everyone I talked to basically said it will last about 10 days no matter what. Of course I took that as a challenge, determined to beat their 10 day score, so I resorted to researching natural baby cold remedies….I cannot say for sure that I beat the 9 to 10 day score BUT I can say with confidence that the last 6-7 days of her bad cold were extremely manageable. I credit those manageable days to the actions we took below with the help of a few awesome products. See the list below!

Note: June Bug has had eczema since shortly after birth (see that post for more details), and although its so much better now, she has extremely sensitive skin so you may determine you do not need some of the sensitive skin products mentioned below.

All I can say is that I wish I started this routine on Day 0 or Day 1 because it made all the difference!

  1. Bath every night (for those sick days) with these important ingredients!
    • Splash of Apple Cider Vinegar- grocery store bought
    • Drop or two of essential oils. I used eucalyptus and chamomile.
    • Handful of Epsom salt. (Dr. Teal’s Epsom Salt is what we have but any would work) These bags are huge and last forever and I use them whenever I have time for a bath myself!

  2. Humidifier with Zarbee’s Naturals Baby Soothing Chest Rub.  This is basically the baby, all natural version if Vicks Vaporub, and its Petroleum and Menthol Free (and not that expensive…about $6 on Amazon. Yay!!) Instructions: We simply put some on our finger and rubbed in in the humidifier’s water container as well as around the fan. (Here is the humidifier we were gifted for the nursery. There are probably cheaper ones out there to do the job, but I will say this one is so quiet.)

  3. Zarbee’s Naturals Baby Soothing Chest Rub on feet covered by booties or socks (I must share the best booties ever!)

  4. Make baby drink water!! (Side Note: My husband thinks this is the solution to everything health related. In this case, I didn’t tell him but I think it helped)

  5. Pedialyte

  6. Zarbee’s Naturals Baby Cough Syrup + Mucus. The + Mucus part was important to us! Tip: try putting/mixing in yogurt if your little one doesn’t take medicine well from the syringe provided with product.

  7. Extra Vitamin C in diet– we love clementines and luckily so does June. We had her eating clementines every meal.

  8. Boogie Wipes– these natural wipes are so soft on baby’s face. We use them frequently and no other type of wiping her face (like paper towels, etc.

  9. Essential oils. I also put a pot of water with a few drops of essential oils on the stove top during the day to clear up baby’s stuffy nose.

Don’t forget to clean sheets & blankets for baby. Also, clean and wipe down all phones/remotes (our June is obsessed with them) and doorknobs to reduce re-exposure.
